CROSSHATXH (the poetry series you can't live without)
Because I'm a proponent of the idea that, when you don't have access to what you want to see in your community, you make it...
Wisconsin Books to Prisoners
The most important thing to have access to in prison: opportunities to learn. This means books, which serve as companions, vehicles for learning, and vehicles for modifying our self-concept (which is, of course, the same for those of us on the outside, but they're even more valuable to folks inside). Your new/newish used books won't find a better home. Contact the volunteers at Books to Prisoners so they can get your books into the hands of people who will appreciate them greatly!
WOODLAND PATTERN BOOK CENTER
Independent bookstore in Milwaukee. Hub of words and art since 1979.
Avol's Books
My favorite used bookstore in Madison. Home to many wonderful readings.
MADRE
Donate to grassroots organizations in countries all over the world (Iraq, Sudan, Haiti, many more) that have been founded and are run by local women for other local women and their families. No one knows how to put resources to use in a community better than the women who live there.
KIVA micro-lending -- "Loans that change lives"
We're interdependent creatures. Lend 25 dollars to someone in a developing country with limited resources and a good business plan. This is low risk and all money goes directly to entrepreneur.
FAMILY CONNECTIONS OF WISCONSIN
A necessary, underfunded nonprofit in Madison. They serve moms and kids affected by incarceration. In need of volunteers/resources.
